Marin ReLeaf Acorn to Oak Project, China Camp State Park

This project was begun in 2002 in an effort to prevent mud slides on the steep hill side above Knight Drive due to the removal the Eucalyptus globlus two years before. Working with Marin ReLeaf, more than 300 acorns were harvested from local Coast Live Oak trees. Eastward from the hillside is Patrick’s Ridge where more trees were started. These are intended to provide cross pollination between the sides of the ridge should there be a major die off of mature oaks due to the disease Phytophra ramorum, the pathogen causing Sudden Oak Disease. Summer irrigation and transporting water to the sites is not possible.

On planting day, one hundred sites of 3 seeds each were planted with the help of more than 125 volunteers. Since then, the sites have been monitored once or twice each year with replanting of some sites in subsequent December. This is a research project for Sudden Oak Disease by University of California.
